As my first year of college comes to a rapid end, I wanted to share a few thoughts…
Things I learned Freshman Year:
9 am is the earliest class I can handle.
My internal clock got totally readjusted – I went to bed by 10 (usually 9) in high school, now it’s more like 1am. Think about that when you’re scheduling your classes!
I moved to a city where I didn’t know anyone & chose a school where no one from my high school went. It was a big move, but I’m so glad I did it! There wasn’t a better choice for me than the University of Kentucky, my home away from home.
There are two “looks” in college – just rolled out of bed (xl t-shirts, barely combed hair, zero makeup) & downright sexy (low cut, short & full face make up & hair). I’m not kidding. No one dresses up for class. If you did in high school – let it go. On the other hand, when you go out to parties, you have to bring it!!
Greek life is amazing (Tri Delta especially!) The friendships I’ve made & experiences I’ve had will be with me for life. If you’re considering Rushing or Pledging, I highly recommend it.
On that note, you simply can’t have too many Greek t-shirts. Your sorority & all fraternity t-shirts from parties & events are must have additions to your wardrobe!
I have met so many great people in college. Roommates, classmates, professors, neighbors… they influenced me & changed me for the better! I am so grateful & my heart is full because of them.
Call your parents. Trust me on this. They miss you and you know you miss them.
I didn’t stay in as close touch with my high school friends as I thought I would. It’s sad but I think it’s probably normal. Everything in life eventually comes to an end and your high school chapter is no exception. Embrace college and the amazing experiences and memories that will come along with it. We’re all spreading our wings. I will always care about them & cherish the memories we made.
Spring break is not for the faint of heart. I’m glad I did it, but wow, it was exhausting.
I love the south! The weather, the accents, the traditions – wouldn’t want to be anywhere else for these four years! I will never hear the song ‘Dixieland Delight’ again and not sing s. If you go to school in the SEC, you know what I’m talking about…
I will never hear the song ‘Dixieland Delight’ again and not sing along (the Kentucky way). If you go to school in the SEC, you know what I’m talking about…
Dating freshman year in college is hard – everyone is figuring things out for themselves & it takes a while to develop romantic relationships (just ask my roommates!). Patience & understanding is the best advice I have regarding this topic.
I missed my dog & cat – but FaceTime (and Snapchat) works wonders!
Going to a school with a big sports program is way more fun than I anticipated! There’s nothing more fun than Caturday’s during football & basketball season!
Classes are hard & professors expect a lot. I knew it would be different than high school, and the challenges took some getting used to. I’m super proud that I exceeded my GPA goals & have officially declared my major (Journalism – Broadcast emphasis) & minor (Digital Media). Good luck to all my friends on finals!
And most of all, I loved every second I spent with my roommates.
I’m looking forward to summer, but I’m already counting down the minutes until we move into our house together next fall:)
